Ben Vorlich & Stuc a Chroin
Photos taken: August 2004
I began the day quite late, lying in till around 11am. Didn't get going till 12, and it was 2pm before I was at the start of of the walk. My target was Ben Vorlich, a mountain I was quite familiar with, and the other munro behind it, Stuc a Chroin, which I was going to walk/climb for the very first time. Roundtrip time according to the guidebook was 8 hours - but I knew I could do it much faster than that.
The ascent of Ben Vorlich is steep. By steep I mean, that from the word go you are climbing, and you do not stop climbing until you hit the summit. Anyway, this is a view looking backwards onto Loch Earn.
It's about 30mins into the walk, and you can see lodge below which you park. Looking up ahead you see what you came for: Ben Vorlich at some 985m or 3280ft.
About an hour later I found myself pretty far up the mountain. Looking back on Loch Earn I took these two pictures, taken at about 30mins interval, with the latter being almost at the summit

From Ben Vorlich I decided to also climb Stuc a' Chroin (975m / 3200ft).
That being the view from Ben Vorlich to it. About an hour later, and half-way back down, this stood in my way to the summit.
It was quite a nasty scramble too the top, though enjoyable. Then we got the view! First looking South, a little tarn.
Then looking back on Ben Vorlich. What a majestic mountain!
And that was it! Well, the descent took me another two hours and a bit..meaning the whole trip took about 5 hours. Not quite in half the time of the guidebook, but not far off. Fantastic day! More soon, from another mountain!
